What is WHOIS?

WHOIS is a public database of domain registration information maintained by domain registrars. When a domain is registered, the registrar records who registered it, when it expires, which nameservers it uses, and other details. WHOIS lookups query this database directly.

What WHOIS tells you about email deliverability

  • Domain age - Newly registered domains (less than 30 days old) are treated with higher suspicion by spam filters. This is one reason new domain emails land in spam.
  • Nameservers - The WHOIS nameserver list should match your NS records. Mismatches can indicate DNS propagation issues or an accidental DNS provider change.
  • Expiry date - An expired domain loses its DNS records. If your domain expiry is approaching, renew it before DNS-dependent services like email break.
  • Registrar lock - Domain status like clientTransferProhibited is normal and means the domain is protected from unauthorized transfers. Unlocked domains are a security risk.

WHOIS privacy and redacted data

Since GDPR (2018), most European registrars and many others redact personal contact information from WHOIS records. You may see "Redacted for Privacy" or contact details replaced with proxy addresses. Technical data (nameservers, dates, status) is still usually available.

FAQ

Why does WHOIS show "Redacted for Privacy"?

GDPR and privacy protection services offered by registrars hide personal contact information. The registrar replaces the registrant's name, email, and phone with a proxy to protect privacy. Technical data like nameservers, registration dates, and domain status are still publicly visible.

How does domain age affect email deliverability?

Spam filters consider domain age as a trust signal. A domain registered days ago with no history is treated with more suspicion than one registered years ago. New domains often need a warm-up period before reaching full inbox placement rates. Getting authentication (SPF, DKIM, DMARC) right from day one helps build that trust faster.

What does "clientTransferProhibited" domain status mean?

It means the registrar has locked the domain to prevent unauthorized transfers. This is a standard security measure - it should be enabled on all domains you own. It does not affect DNS, email delivery, or website operation.
