What is BIMI?

BIMI (Brand Indicators for Message Identification) lets you display your logo next to your emails in supporting clients like Gmail, Apple Mail, and Yahoo Mail. It's a DNS TXT record that points to your SVG logo file and an optional Verified Mark Certificate (VMC).

BIMI requirements

  • DMARC at p=quarantine or p=reject - you cannot use BIMI with p=none.
  • SVG logo in Tiny PS format, hosted on HTTPS, accessible publicly.
  • VMC (Verified Mark Certificate) - optional but required for Gmail to show the logo with a checkmark. Costs ~$1,500/year from DigiCert or Entrust.

How to set up a BIMI record

  1. Make sure DMARC is at p=quarantine or p=reject.
  2. Prepare an SVG logo in Tiny PS 1.2 format (specific SVG subset).
  3. Host the SVG at a stable HTTPS URL.
  4. Add a TXT record at default._bimi.yourdomain.com with value:
    v=BIMI1; l=https://yourdomain.com/logo.svg
  5. Optionally, add a VMC to qualify for Gmail checkmark: v=BIMI1; l=https://...; a=https://...authority.pem

Which email clients support BIMI?

  • Gmail - requires VMC for the blue checkmark
  • Apple Mail (iOS 16+, macOS Ventura+) - works without VMC
  • Yahoo Mail - basic support
  • Fastmail, Zoho - partial support
  • Outlook - not supported

FAQ

Can I use BIMI without a VMC?

Yes. Many clients like Apple Mail show your logo without a VMC. Gmail requires a VMC for the blue "verified sender" checkmark, but your logo still appears for most other clients.

Does BIMI improve deliverability?

BIMI does not directly affect deliverability, but it signals that your authentication is strong (DMARC enforcement required), which is good. Displaying your logo improves brand recognition and can increase open rates.

What SVG format does BIMI require?

BIMI logos must be in SVG Tiny PS (Portable Secure) 1.2 format. Regular SVG files exported from Figma or Adobe Illustrator often need to be converted. Use a BIMI SVG validator before publishing.

My DMARC is p=reject but Gmail still doesn't show my logo

Gmail requires a VMC (Verified Mark Certificate). Without it, Gmail does not display the logo even with perfect DMARC. VMCs are issued by DigiCert and Entrust and require trademark registration.
